The Effect & Safety of Mecillinam on Postoperative Infections in Plastic Surgery


Abstract
A prospective study was conducted to evaluate the prophylactic, therapeutic and safety of Mecillinam in substitution with Aminoglycoside on 30 patients undergone the operation in the Depart. of Plastic Surgery, Chonpook National University Hospital from Jul. 1991 to Sep. 1991 and the following. conclusions were made.
1. The efficacy of mecillinam (93%, 14/15) was comparbie to that of Aminoglycoside (87%, 13/15) when used for prophylactic and therapeutic purpose in combination with ? ?-lactam.
2. There were 2 cases (2/15) of creatinine level elevation in the Aminoglycoside group, but no such case was observed in the Mecillinam group. The incidence of other adverse effects was almost similar in both group. (1/15, 1/15)
3. In conclusion, Mecillinam can be used as the antibiotic after operation to prevent and treat Gram negative bacteria infection and shall be considered in the patients with weak renal function.
